about this blog

This blog was created in order to document the history of niche gallery since its inception in 2007 by artist naomi sato.

'niche gallery' is purposefully titled with lower-case letters to symbolize its rebellion against hierarchy and control in art institutions and traditions.

On this blog you'll find exhibition poster images from 2007-2009, as well as the original written concept for the gallery.

E-mail lisa.spinelli@hotmail.com if you'd like to read a copy of naomi sato's original manifesto for the gallery, titled "White Cube, Plexi-Glass Door".

We're a member of the Locker Gallery Association

As of April 2011, the niche gallery is a member of a new movement that has started in Vienna, Austria called the Locker Gallery Association. If you'd like to register for your own locker gallery license, or just out of sheer curiousity, you can visit their website at www.lockergallery.org.

Update: April 2017 - the web address for the Locker Gallery Association seems to have expired.

naomi sato: 2007-2008 curator and founder

Founded and constructed niche gallery after contemplating a former student's installation of a plexi-glass door on a locker in the University of Lethbridge Fine Arts Building. Sato established the ideals and vision for niche gallery for future generations of artists to continue and elaborate upon. Every exhibition is a collaboration with her and the artist who installed the plexi-glass door ten years before its inception; this chain forms a continuous collaboration between every artist who has exhibited in the space since the gallery's official founding in 2007.

Amber-Jane Grove: 2008-2009 curator

First curator to run the niche gallery as a completely extra-curricular and group effort with volunteers Brenna Crabtree and Lisa Spinelli. Grove collaborated directly with Sato when first taking on the curating position for niche gallery and played a leading role in keeping the gallery up and running for two semesters. Grove also initiated some technical renovations to the space as well as the niche gallery's inclusion into the U of L Art Society.
